Changing A Hospitals Culture The Guest Relations Program At Medical College Of Virginia Hospitals Thursday, July 17, 2006 Hospitals at Georgia Teaching Hospital are quite active. They are the only hospital in the nation that maintains a hospital-based campus, hosted by an outside investor. Each hospital uses the Hospital Manager’s class to operate and maintain its own facilities without any investment from outside the medical community. Though the medical community may make great strides in working to ensure this continuity, it is true that the hospital is constantly trying new things to keep patient infrastructure running forward, even sometimes with the help of local professionals. Unfortunately, in performing the work needed for a hospital-based campus or hospital-based job as a full-time member, the staff has seen to it that the necessary people are all on the line to ensure maximum patient care, healthy hospitals don’t make the same mistakes they do, and the vast majority of medical facilities do not. The following organizations have made a concerted effort to educate community leaders on the importance of developing strategic leadership about hospital-based facilities, and to encourage collaborations between neighboring hospitals. Recently, these organizations were working to promote the benefits of hospitals on both levels. We’ve also had a very collaborative round of events that created much needed discussion in this way. These events have been led by Dean Russ Baker, the Co-Chair of Annapolis Hospital Trust Management Development. A hospital is a community institution to serve a specific part of the community. Our hospital is for the greater part of our people, and it’s such a diverse community. The nature of hospitals varies between communities and several senior physicians feel that their facilities should meet the needs of every community member. In one hospital, for example, facilities are generally relatively small. Most major hospitals want the larger hospitals which are more generous and accessible and have private facilities. Our University School of Medicine Medical Center (UMCM) has hosted a guest event with patients on July 26, 2006, to welcome other physicians from other general hospitals, including the Cleveland Clinic, Johns Hopkins University, the Miami University School of Medicine, and a few other hospitals.

These meetings have been very successful in establishing collaborations between hospital leaders. These meetings have even launched new initiatives to emphasize shared goals for hospitals to further the purpose and value of the hospital. There are good reasons for this. Hospital leaders have learned to think carefully about the development of new leadership; many of these strong recommendations are the result of a recent training session in partnership with the United States Institute of Peace and Democratic Studies.
